CPAP Outside the Walls of Critical Care - COVID 19 : Liverpool University Hospitals FT
This innovative, multidisciplinary service was created to address the potential influx of patients with severe respiratory failure due to COVID-19. These patients can require CPAP, which is provided within Critical Care (CC). Limiting CPAP to ITU would quickly overwhelm the Trust’s capacity of Level 2-3 beds. There was a real risk that we would need to limit the number of patients eligible for this, or higher, levels of care.
We proposed a service re-design, using the combined efforts of a team of Respiratory, Infectious Disease (ID), and CC teams to safely and effectively deliver CPAP in a ward-based setting.
