Introduction of a day case total hip replacement pathway : Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford University Hospitals FT

The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a specialist orthopaedic unit which forms part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In 2018/19, the hospital performed 664 primary total hip replacements with patients following a traditional enhanced recovery pathway which entailed a 2-5 day hospital stay. In June 2020, the multi-disciplinary project team, including surgeons, therapists, anaesthetists, pharmacists and nurses developed an accelerated hip replacement pathway that facilitated the safe early restart of hip replacement surgery during the Covid-19 pandemic, including the introduction of a new day-case pathway which has proven popular with patients.
