The sepsis point of care (SPOC) initiative : Brighton and Sussex University Hospital Trust

The aim of the project was to rapidly identify patients who may be unwell in the emergency department (ED) using a point of care (POC) device capable of rapidly and accurately providing a full blood count (FBC) in under 2 minutes. This provided not only rapid care but sped up the referral process and improved the flow of patients from the ED by facilitating early referrals. The project was a collaboration between the Emergency Department, the Point of Care team (POCT) at BSUH and an external commercial provider who provided the equipment and resources to conduct the study.
